Why Choose Cloth?

Cloth Diapers and their environmental impact

Cloth is Better for your Baby’s Bottom!

Disposable diapers were introduced mainstream in 1961. Prior to that, virtually every baby’s bottom was wrapped in soft cotton, and diaper services were as common as the milkman. By 1991, 90% of babies in the United States were using disposable diapers which contain, among other things, plastics, synthetic perfumes and harsh chemicals such as sodium polyacrylate, used to absorb the urine and keep it in the form of a “gel” against your baby’s skin. Since the introduction of single-use diapers, diaper rash has become an unavoidable epidemic, increasing baby and toddler rashes from 7% in 1955 to a reported 78% in 1991! Cloth diapers are 100% cotton and are far better for your baby’s bottom than their disposable counterparts.

Cloth is Better for the Environment!

The 18 billion single-use diapers discarded each year are one of the largest sources of solid waste in landfills, second only to newspapers and food and beverage containers. Did you know that it will take over 500 years for a single-use diaper to decompose? That means that every single-use diaper ever made is still in existence today. In addition, the 84 million pounds per year of raw, untreated sewage in landfills from diapers emits large quantities of carbon dioxide and methane, both of which have been linked as major contributors to Global Warming. This is precisely why the improper discarding of raw sewage is illegal, which means that every time a disposable diaper containing solid waste is thrown in the trash, a crime has been committed.

However, during the cloth diaper cleaning process, all of the waste is disposed through the sewage lines and ultimately treated in the Parishes sewage treatment plants. In addition, the average life of a cloth diaper is extended because of its many uses. Once a cloth diaper is no longer suitable for your baby’s bottom, it comes in handy around the house for cleaning. We will offer these 2nd Use diapers as they become available. In addition, many dealerships and other local businesses purchase them for rags as well. This keeps the diapers in use for a long time, while keeping them out of our trash cans.

Cloth is Better for potty training and your wallet!

On average, toddlers in cloth diapers potty train up to one year earlier than those in disposables. This is not only a plus for your household budget and the environment, but doing away with a year’s worth of diaper changes is enough to give every parent something to smile about.
